Lithe to a Fault (a kmeme fill)
Original prompt: Hwake (no gender or class preference) and Fenris are BFFs (or maybe their relationship is developing into something different). They spend a lot of time together and Fenris visits him/her often. Leandra likes Hawke's new friend but she thinks he's too much on the skinny side, so she treats him to dinner almost every day, spoiling him with delicious food and refilling his plate every once in a while.
Bonus internets if Fenris does gain weight (not much, just a few pounds) and Varric notices and teases him about it.
"Come now, Fenris, Mother didn't mean it in a BAD way," Athena tucked a lock of jet hair behind her ear, concern written on her face.
Fenris crossed his arms over his chest as he glared back at her. "She said I looked like I was starving. I do not see how that could possibly be construed as anything but."
"She just ... she's being a mother. It's her job."
He rolled his eyes in response. "So even though you're all struggling to make ends meet there in Lowtown, she will feed me as well? I doubt that will be any good for your finances."
"We'll be on that expedition before you know it, and when we get back from the Deep Roads, we'll have plenty of money. Humor her, please." Athena patted Fenris on the shoulder before going inside Gamlen's house.
Leandra Amell had insisted that Fenris join them for a meal. She seemed concerned that the elf subsisted on wine and air alone -- not too far from the truth -- and she wanted to make sure that he got some real sustenance for once. Fenris was embarrassed that she would go to these lengths when the family struggled to feed the four mouths they had already.
Fenris took a deep breath and followed Athena inside the house.
"Oh, Fenris!" Bethany grinned at the elf, surprise showing in her eyes. "I wasn't sure you'd come tonight." She leaned in, dropping her voice to a whisper. "Nena and I have picked up a few more jobs recently to try to ensure Mother could do this. She really sounded worried about you."
"She shouldn't have been." Fenris cast his eyes downward.
Bethany's grin melted into a gentle smile. "She should be. She knows you spend a lot of time with us, and let me tell you - Nena and I could eat an entire horse each after the days we have. She just wants to make sure you're cared for, since you're almost part of the family now."
Fenris snorted in response, and Bethany shrugged and walked away.
"I'm so glad you came for dinner, Fenris." Leandra looked ecstatic as she attempted to dust a white powder off her skirt - flour? "It's nothing extravagant, I'm afraid... I hope it'll still be to your liking."
Fenris nodded once. "I'm sure it will be wonderful, serah."
"Please. Call me Leandra."
Fenris nodded again, before Athena could drag him to sit down at the small table with her. A mismatched fifth chair had been dragged to the table, and Athena had taken its awkward corner location at the chipped square table. Leandra had already placed the meal in front of them, a thick stew that appeared to be more vegetables than meat, with some thick-sliced crusty bread that smelled like it had just minutes earlier come out of the oven.
Despite himself, Fenris' stomach growled. Leandra did not say a word, but a small smile teased the corners of her lips.
"Eat up, before the stew gets cold!" Leandra passed around bowls and spoons.
---
Fenris shifted in his chair, trying to ignore the uncomfortable feeling of an over-full stomach. Somehow there had been plenty of food for the five of them, and Leandra had even refilled his bowl twice, shoving more bread into his hands each time. "I must go. I have... matters to which I must attend."
Athena helped Fenris up from his chair. "Do you want Beth and I to walk you home?"
"No, you two shouldn't be out in Lowtown alone this time of night. I'll be fine." Fenris turned to Leandra, a rare smile touching the corners of his eyes. "Thank you... Leandra."
Leandra nodded in reply. "Come by any time, Fenris."
He settled into bed that night with a full stomach, something that had only happened a handful of times in recent memory. It was a pleasant feeling, he thought. One he might want to ensure happened a bit more often.
---
Athena had gone into the Deep Roads with that apostate, the dwarf, and Aveline. Fenris didn't mind; he knew being underground for weeks would have driven him mad. Bethany was furious that her sister had left her behind, and Fenris found her hanging about his house a little more often than he would have liked.
"Don't you have... somewhere else to be?" He felt intruded-upon, like she infiltrated what little personal space he had.
Bethany made a face that spoke to a certain degree of disgust. "I don't like Merrill, Fenris. She's..." She waved her hands in the air, trying to grasp for a word in a literal sense.
"... An idiot?" Fenris knew it wasn't the phrase Bethany wanted, but it was his opinion on the Dalish nonetheless.
The woman smirked at Fenris. "Completely oblivious was the phrase I was looking for. Anyway, Mother has decided that you're coming over for dinner tonight. She made threats, Fenris. I don't have a choice in this matter and neither do you."
Fenris tried to hide his smile. At least once a week, Leandra asked Fenris to come over for dinner. He didn't much mind, it meant he got to spend more time with Athena. The dinners were a bit awkward with Athena in the Deep Roads, but Fenris found that as the weeks dragged on, Leandra got a small measure of comfort from "playing mother" to him.
Fenris went home again with a full stomach. He only slept soundly the nights after Leandra's dinners, which were elaborate for the pitiful amount of coin they were able to spend on food.
---
"What's that?" Varric asked, poking Fenris' waist.
Fenris scowled. "What's what?"
"Is that... is your belt actually cutting into you?" Varric poked the tiny roll above the leather belt again.
"Stop that!" Fenris pushed Varric's prodding hand away. Leandra's meals had become even more rich and elaborate since Athena had returned with more riches than the Hawke family had ever seen. She now had a full kitchen to make use of, and greater access to the foods of her childhood.
Since Bethany had been taken to the Gallows, Leandra had become more aggressive in her mothering of Fenris. He didn't mind, though he would never admit it - he didn't remember his own mother, and it was wonderful to feel like he had one.
---
"Are you sure you're done, Fenris?" Leandra hovered another heaping spoonful of potatoes over his plate, concern etched into every fine line of her face.
"Mother, he said he was!" Athena picked up Fenris' plate, hurrying into the kitchen with it. The elf had become somewhat self-conscious lately after not only Varric, but Isabela and Anders had teased him about the slight weight he'd gained from eating Leandra's rich meals. He had been able to maintain his slight figure when she only fed him once a week, but after Athena had bought the mansion, Leandra had insisted upon feeding him nightly.
Athena didn't mind, Fenris knew. She had made no secret of her feelings for him - feelings he returned, much to his disbelief.
"At least have a slice of pie," Leandra gestured to the fruit pie on the table. "It's your favorite, Fenris... I know how much you like apple pie."
"Mother! You don't have to take it, Fenris, if you don't want it. Don't feel forced into it."
"Perhaps a bit later, Leandra." Fenris let another rare smile slip.
Leandra nodded, though her eyes spoke of her disappointment.
Athena bit her lip and smiled at Fenris. "So you said you had wine back at your place?"
"I always have wine, Athena."
"Please, Fenris, I have asked you many times to call me Nena. Do you think that maybe...?"
Fenris' smile spread a little wider - he knew what Athena wanted. "You want to sit up until all hours of the morning talking?"
"I think that'd be nice. Maybe we can bring some pie and eat it later?"
"I would like that." Fenris did always love Leandra's apple pie.
